Rashid Khan Ties the Knot in Kabul Amid Wedding Buzz
Afghanistan’s T20 team captain, Rashid Khan, has been making headlines recently after his wedding ceremony in Kabul. The cricketer took to Instagram to share his wedding pictures, simply captioning them “Hitched.”
Thousands of well-wishers have flooded social media, congratulating Rashid on his marriage. Fellow Afghan cricketer and senior team player, Mohammad Nabi, posted on X (formerly Twitter), extending his heartfelt congratulations to Rashid.
Images from the wedding in Kabul reveal that the ceremony was a grand affair with hundreds of guests in attendance. The event was held at Kabul’s Imperial Continental Hotel, and no effort was spared in ensuring an extravagant celebration. The hotel presented a large cake featuring Rashid Khan and the Afghan cricket team, while outside, armed security and fireworks added to the festivity. Among the visuals, a Lexus car adorned with a custom plate bearing Rashid Khan’s name caught the public’s eye.

Several media reports and social media posts have highlighted that not only did Rashid Khan get married that evening, but his three brothers, Amir Khalil, Zakiullah, and Raza Khan, also tied the knot in a shared celebration.
Rashid Khan, who hails from a large family with six brothers and four sisters, had already shared pictures with his elder brother and his children on Instagram. An estimated 1,000 guests attended the wedding, with many notable Afghan cricketers, including former captain Mohammad Nabi, actively participating. Nabi posted pictures from the event, writing, “The one and only King Khan, Rashid Khan! Congratulations on your wedding. Wishing you a lifetime of love, happiness, and success.”
Afghan presenter Nilofer Rahmani showcased highlights from the wedding on Kabul Show, while numerous Afghan citizens sent their best wishes for Rashid’s married life. However, the wedding also brought back an old statement of Rashid’s into the limelight: “Didn’t Rashid Khan say he would marry after winning the World Cup?”

Some social media users teased the cricketer, pointing out his previous remarks about marriage. However, many defended him, claiming his words had been misinterpreted. One user clarified, “Rashid never said he would marry only after winning a World Cup; he just expressed his desire to see Afghanistan’s cricket team in a better position first.”
A video resurfaced showing Rashid clarifying the matter: “I was hurt when I heard that because, truthfully, I never made that statement. What I actually said was that in the next few years, I have a lot of cricket to play—there are three World Cups (2021, 2022 T20 World Cups and the 2023 ODI World Cup)—so my focus is entirely on cricket.”
In the midst of the celebrations, many also asked, “Where is the bride?” In Afghanistan, it is customary to hold separate wedding events for men and women, and in many traditional communities, showcasing women publicly is considered inappropriate.

An X user, Afghan Atlan Wan, shared four pictures from the wedding and described the night as “historic,” noting, “Our Kabul cricket star and captain, Rashid Khan, along with his three brothers, all got married on the same day. Wishing them a long and happy life!”
Rashid Khan is currently on leave from Test matches due to an injury and subsequent surgery, but he remains an integral part of Afghanistan’s limited-overs squad. After the political changes in Afghanistan in 2001, Rashid’s family moved to Pakistan, where he began playing cricket, idolizing Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi. The family later returned to Afghanistan, where Rashid continues to reside.

Rashid Khan was especially close to his parents. His father passed away in 2018, and his mother followed in 2020 after a prolonged illness, both losses that Rashid mourned publicly on social media.
