London, October 8, 2024 – Speaker of the Punjab Provincial Assembly, Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, met with Secretary General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Mr. Stephen Twigg, in London. Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK, Dr. Mohammad Faisal, was also present at the meeting.
During the discussions, Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan emphasized Pakistan’s continued commitment to the fundamental values of the Commonwealth, noting that as a founding member, Pakistan recognizes the significant role the Commonwealth can play in addressing contemporary geopolitical and economic challenges for the welfare of its citizens.
The Speaker also announced that the Punjab Assembly plans to host a Regional Conference for Commonwealth Parliamentarians in February 2025, an invitation which Mr. Stephen Twigg accepted. The event aims to foster dialogue and collaboration among parliamentarians from Commonwealth nations.
Highlighting transparency and public engagement during his tenure, Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan stated that the Punjab Assembly now provides live transmissions of its sessions and has established a Parliamentary Development Unit, which includes a mandatory two-month training course on parliamentary practices. The CPA’s study has been incorporated into this curriculum to enhance legislative expertise.
A key focus of the Speaker’s legislative efforts includes addressing critical issues such as climate change, which he stressed has severe impacts on the lives of ordinary citizens. He emphasized the need for progressive legislation to uplift communities and address pressing social challenges.
Mr. Stephen Twigg commended the initiatives of the Punjab Assembly and expressed his eagerness to participate in the upcoming conference, praising the Speaker’s leadership and commitment to promoting transparency and development within the legislative body.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan presented a memento to the Secretary General in a gesture of goodwill and collaboration.
