Shan Masood’s Final Opportunity as ‘Bazball’ Magic Fades

The Waning Magic of ‘Bazball’ and Shan Masood’s Last Chance to Revive Pakistan’s Test Fortunes

The Waning Magic of ‘Bazball’ and Shan Masood’s Last Chance

When Brendon McCullum took charge as the head coach of England’s Test team, Joe Root’s side had recorded one of the lowest points in England’s Test cricket history. The team was in dire need of a revolutionary turnaround to restore its lost glory.

As soon as McCullum joined, Ben Stokes assumed the role of captain, and the aggressive ‘Bazball’ approach in Test cricket began to unsettle opponents to the point where seasoned Test cricketers like Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon called it a serious headache.

By adopting ‘Bazball’, the English Test team embarked on a remarkable journey of victories, a feat rarely seen in history. Stokes’ side not only became unbeatable at home but also dominated during overseas tours. One of the greatest achievements of this approach was England defeating Pakistan in a Test series on Pakistan’s home soil—only the second time in six decades of bilateral cricket history.

However, the golden era of ‘Bazball’ now seems to be waning under the scorching pressures of time. Over the past two years, consistency in results has diminished, and the winning percentage has significantly declined.

James Anderson, who led England’s bowling attack for two decades, has retired. The architect of this revolution, Ben Stokes, is struggling with injuries, and Ollie Robinson, who played a pivotal role during the recent tour of Pakistan, is also unavailable.

The English bowling attack is without its fiery pacer Mark Wood, and the recent loss in the final Test match against Sri Lanka has also shaken the confidence of their batsmen.

These factors suggest that Pakistan should emerge as favorites on their home ground, but Pakistan’s troubles far exceed those of England. Not winning a single home Test in three years is a cause for concern, and the clean sweep by Bangladesh last month is even more humiliating.

While Pakistan has handed the leadership to Shan Masood in hopes of reviving their Test cricket, the fact that all five matches under his captaincy have ended in losses is a warning sign.

Shaheen Afridi’s pace, form, and rhythm are now memories of the past. Naseem Shah still possesses his sharpness, but injuries and a year-long absence have impacted his red-ball form. Although Aamir Jamal’s return is promising, his injury and long absence have left doubts about his form.

However, Pakistan is fortunate to have Mir Hamza in their ranks. Known for his discipline and adaptability, Hamza complements the traditionally fiery Pakistani pace attack by understanding the changing conditions and molding his bowling to suit the game’s demands.

Even if the Multan pitch offers little for seamers early on, the last two and a half days should provide plenty of interest as the sun-baked surface starts to crumble, and reverse swing comes into play, offering seamers an opportunity to shine.

However, for reverse swing to be effective, Pakistan’s pacers will need to significantly improve their discipline.

While England’s bowling attack may lack experience compared to Pakistan’s, they have maintained better standards of discipline recently, and the way Pakistan’s middle order faltered against relatively inexperienced Bangladeshi bowlers will offer hope to England’s Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, and Chris Woakes.

Although English cricket is not currently at its peak, the disjointed and confidence-lacking side under Shan Masood’s leadership may present an ideal target for England to apply their fearless approach and reap further rewards.

Shan Masood may be a newcomer to international captaincy, but he has considerable experience leading in the county circuit. While his understanding of the game’s dynamics is sound, he sometimes lags behind his opponents’ strategies by a step.

However, Shan will not have the luxury of time here. After three years of home defeats, the only way to erase the shame of the recent debacle against Bangladesh is by securing a victory over this English team.
